Fostering Commitment | Working with Local Communities | Networking

Founded in 1986, the National Low Income Energy Consortium (NLIEC) brings together public, private, and nonprofit sector organizations and individuals for the common purpose of reducing the residential energy and utility hardships and crises faced by low-income consumers by:

  • Finding common ground among diverse groups that work with, serve or represent low-income energy consumers;

  • Exploring, exchanging and promoting innovative ideas and successful efforts that improve the ability of low-income consumers to access and afford energy;

  • Setting an agenda for low-income energy policy at the federal, state and local levels.

A Public- Private Partnership

NLIEC is a public-private partnership, governed by a board of organizations representing the full spectrum of perspectives in the low income energy community.  The Board of Directors reflects diverse interests with a singular purpose embodied in the theme "Building Bridges." NLIEC works hard to build bridges of cooperation and understanding between the 3,000 plus organizations and countless individuals who are developing coordinated solutions to low-income energy problems.

Increasing Public Awareness

NLIEC develops an understanding of the problems associated with consumers that cannot afford to pay their energy bills.  Furthermore, NLIEC increases awareness of the programs that provide assistance, and it draws attention to problems concerning administrative procedures of assistance programs that may impede the eligibility of deserving individuals and families.

Sponsoring Major Conferences

Through the sponsorship of national conferences, provided annually since 1987, and low income energy projects, NLIEC continues to heighten awareness of the energy needs of low-income consumers.  The 2010 National Energy and Utility Affordability Conference, presented in partnership with the National Fuel Funds Network, will be held in San Antonio, Texas. The 2008 conference was in Denver, Colorado, and NEUAC 2009 was in Portland, Oregon.

Fostering Commitment

Those who attend our annual conference become more committed to reducing low income energy crises and hardships.  The conferences provide an atmosphere for participants to discuss viewpoints, share information, and form consensus on strategies for addressing energy problems of low-income consumers.

Working with Local Communities

In recent years, NLIEC has placed a greater emphasis on partnering with local groups to assist them in reducing the energy hardships of low-income residents.  NLIEC has channeled resources to local organizations, generated local public-private partnerships and helped develop state and regional coalitions that serve low-income energy consumers.
